Roti is an Indian flatbread made from wheat flour, water, and salt. It’s cooked over high heat in a skillet or tawa to get the classic round shape— perfect for scooping up curries.

No. Coconut flour absorbs too much water and the recipe won’t come out the same. Don’t try to use coconut flour instead of almond flour in this recipe.

Shaping keto roti

Traditionally, you shape the roti by hand. Roll balls of dough in your hand and press them out into a circle shape before cooking.

However, I find it much easier to make almond flour roti with a tortilla press or even a rolling pin. Be sure to press the dough between plastic wrap or oil both sides of the press very well to prevent sticking.

Can I make Indian roti ahead of time?

Yes! This almond flour keto chapati can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. Be sure to use an airtight container.

If you want to freeze your rotis, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil before storing them in the freezer. They should last for about two months.

When ready to eat, just thaw your keto chapati at room temperature before cooking them in a hot pan. Enjoy!

Note: If the roti have been frozen, don’t forget to let them thaw before using them for making chapati. Otherwise, they’ll become too brittle and won’t roll out properly.

I hope you enjoy this tasty almond flour roti recipe!

The best pan to make low-carb roti

It’s best to use a non-stick pan or tawa for making roti. This will prevent sticking and help you get a perfectly round shape.

If you don’t have a non-stick pan, make sure to oil the surface lightly before cooking. Otherwise, your roti might stick and tear.

You can try making keto roti or normal roti in a traditional cast iron skillet.

Almond flour keto roti ingredients

  • 2 cups super fine blanched almond flour
  • 6 tablespoons whole psyllium husk
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil or olive oil
  • 1 cup lukewarm water

Why do I need psyllium husk powder?

Psyllium husk helps to bind the ingredients together, creating a dough that’s easier to work with. Without it, your roti won’t have the same texture and elasticity.

Don’t use powder or the texture will be off. The whole husk helps you get a fluffy texture.

How to make keto roti

  • Mix the almond flour, psyllium husks powder, and sea salt in a mixing bowl.
  • Mix in the coconut oil (melted) and the lukewarm water until everything is well blended.
  • Knead it for about 2 minutes to make a dough ball. Then, let the dough rest for about 5 minutes.
  • Break off dough from the main dough ball and make about 8 separate dough balls. Roll them between your hands to make a ball.
  • Place one dough ball in the press. Make sure to line each side with parchment paper or plastic wrap. You can try oiling it with coconut oil or olive oil. Just make sure it doesn’t stick.
  • Fry each keto roti for about 2 minutes over medium high heat. You will flip them when they are golden brown on one side. Fry one flatbread at a time for the best results.

This simple recipe is a staple food in India. Now that you can make a grain free flatbread, experiment by adding herbs to customize the flavor.
